SWG was probably built from one of the most famous franchises known to man. There probably isn’t a person on the planet who has not heard of the epic adventures of Luke Skywalker and his friends. It was only a matter of time till Lucas arts decided to dabble in the online gaming market and this is they’re result. The game has a fair bit of diversity on initial impressions allowing players to choose from 8 distinct classes. It also applies a unique leveling system which helps to differentiate your character from other players. Players are given a choice to choose which skills to use and repeated use of these skills results in the skills increasing in level. The game involves a fair amount of interaction as all the classes are dependent on each other. The world is fairly large however quests from region to the next do not seem to change a lot.
SWG has a several drawbacks due to the presence of non-combat classes. The use of classes such as entertainers and artisans seem to be quite frivolous when considering the class choices for an MMORPG. No one would really pay a monthly fee of $15 dollars to play a flute in a virtual bar to be brutally honest. It seems Lucas Arts took the movies a little too seriously when designing the game. The games main focus is the ever present crisis of the empire. Players are allowed to choose which side to join the empire or the rebels. Players also have a choice between 30 different professions to choose from and due to the intense interaction players will need to use these professions for advancement.
The visuals are over the top and quite scenic, the towns are a fair bit of sweat and tears put in by Lucas Arts. However the game really is a bit of a letdown at the end of the day. Its classes are quite boring and despite the size of the universe it’s more or less empty. Everything you need to do can be done inside a town. Overall this isn’t the epic starwars MMORPG the online community has been waiting for; hopefully Lucas Arts will redeem themselves with a future release.
